In short
- Rain: Tyler's normal year is 42.10 inches. Eleven of 12 months average 2.61 inches or more; only July (2.10) is below that.
- Heat: normal highs reach 90.3, 94.4 and 94.9 F in June, July and August. The driest months, July and August, are also the hottest.
- Cold: average lows stay above freezing every month (coldest: 37.4 F in January). Averages hide single cold nights.
- Storms: April to June carries the most hail and wind reports in Smith County.
- So: the data names trade-offs, not one best month. Pick your trade-off, then ask builders what their schedule allows.

If you are asking about the best time of year to build a barndominium in Tyler, weather is only one input, but it is one you can check. We pulled NOAA's monthly rain and temperature normals for Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. We are an independent referral service that connects landowners with local builders, not a builder ourselves. En español: mejor época para construir un barndominium en Tyler. For the phases of a build, see our East Texas barndominium build timeline.
What this is not: monthly normals give inches of rain, not the number of rainy days, and we found no public data on builder schedules, seasonal prices or wait times. We make no claim about them.
Tyler gets rain in every month
Normal monthly rain at the airport is below. The spread is small: the wettest month (June, 4.38 in) is only about twice the driest (July, 2.10 in). Wet ground on a building site is possible in any season, so the question is how much, not whether.
Normal rainfall by month, 1991 to 2020 (inches)
| Stretch | Months | Normal rain |
|---|---|---|
| Driest | July and August | 4.71 in |
| Winter | December to February | 11.10 in |
| Spring | March to May | 11.27 in |
| Early summer | June | 4.38 in |
| Fall | September to November | 10.64 in |

Wet ground slows site work and slab pours
Rain matters most before the building exists. Clearing, grading, trenching for septic and utilities, and the slab pour all depend on workable ground. The normals cannot tell you how many days a crew loses, but they show where the volume is: October (4.31 in), June (4.38), May (4.07) and December (4.03) are the four wettest months.
July and August
- Least rain: 2.10 and 2.61 inches
- Normal highs of 94.4 and 94.9 F
- Storm reports are lower than in spring, but damaging wind is still reported (42 in June, 22 in July, 21 in August)
Trade-off: better odds of dry ground, harder conditions for crews and for fresh concrete.
October and December
- Two of the four wettest months (4.31 and 4.03 inches)
- Normal highs of 78.9 and 59.4 F
- Cooler and easier on crews
Trade-off: comfortable temperatures, more rain on the site.
Ask your builder how a rain delay is handled in the contract and whether the quote holds if the start date moves. Drainage and the slab edge details matter in any month.
Normal highs top 90 F from June to August
Summer heat affects crews and the way concrete is placed and cured. We are not engineers, so we do not give pour rules. We can show where the heat sits.
Normal daily high by month, 1991 to 2020 (F)

| January | 57.9 F | 37.4 F |
| April | 76.6 F | 54.8 F |
| July | 94.4 F | 74.4 F |
| August | 94.9 F | 73.8 F |
| October | 78.9 F | 56.5 F |

Winter lows average above freezing, but one cold night can still matter
The coldest month is January, with a normal low of 37.4 F and a normal high of 57.9 F. December (39.2 F) and February (41.2 F) are close. No month averages below 32 F.
Ask about it: monthly normals do not count freeze days, so we cannot say how many a given winter brings. If a slab is scheduled for December to February, ask the concrete contractor what they do when the forecast turns cold, and who decides to postpone.
Spring is the storm season for a half-built shell
Our Smith County hail, tornado and wind history counts NOAA Storm Events reports for 2006 to 2025. April has the most 1-inch-plus hail reports (35) and the most damaging wind reports (50). May has 28 and 42; June has 18 and 42. October is a smaller second peak (13 hail, 17 wind). An open frame or a roof without panels is exposed during all of these.
| Month | Hail 1 in+ reports | Wind reports |
|---|---|---|
| April | 35 | 50 |
| May | 28 | 42 |
| June | 18 | 42 |
| October | 13 | 17 |

What the weather says about timing, and what it does not
- Dry ground. July and August have the least normal rain (4.71 in combined). They are also the hottest months.
- Comfortable temperatures. Fall and spring have mild highs but carry more rain, and spring carries the most storm reports.
- Winter. Lows average above freezing, but cold nights happen. Rain is moderate: 11.10 inches from December to February.
- Not covered. Builder availability, material pricing and permit queues. Ask each company.
Every Tyler month has a weather cost; the best month is the one whose cost your builder and your site can handle.
How to use this when planning
- Start the paperwork first: see the Smith County barndominium permits guide. Permits and septic design usually set the start date more than the season does.
- Ask each builder for a written schedule and how weather delays are handled.
- Ask what the building is protected with while it is open or unroofed.
- Use our build checklist to track the steps, and compare bids with how to choose a builder.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time of year to build a barndominium in Tyler?
The weather data names trade-offs, not one best month. Tyler's normal year is 42.10 inches of rain with no dry season: every month averages at least 2.10 inches. July and August are the driest (4.71 inches combined) but also the hottest, with normal highs of 94.4 and 94.9 F. Spring brings the most hail and wind reports. Your builder's calendar and your permit timing matter more, and we have no data on those.
Which months are driest in Tyler?
July (2.10 in) and August (2.61 in) have the lowest normal rainfall at the Tyler airport. Every other month averages 3.07 inches or more.
Does it freeze in Tyler during the winter?
The average low never drops below freezing: January is the coldest month at 37.4 F. Averages hide individual cold nights, though, and monthly normals do not count freeze days. If a pour is planned for winter, ask the concrete contractor how it handles a forecast of cold weather.
Is it too hot to pour a slab in a Tyler summer?
Normal highs reach 94.4 to 94.9 F in July and August. Concrete can be placed in hot weather with the right practices; we are not an engineer. Ask your builder how they handle hot-weather pours, such as early-morning starts and curing.
Is a barndominium cheaper to build in a certain season?
We found no public data on seasonal pricing, so we make no claim. Ask each builder whether the price or start date changes by season, and get written quotes.
When is storm season in Smith County?
In NOAA's 2006 to 2025 storm reports, April has the most 1-inch-plus hail reports (35) and damaging wind reports (50). May and June follow. See our hail, tornado and wind history for the full counts.
